Foundation For Grassroots Initiatives in Africa

GrassRootsAfrica was founded in 2002 and legally certified in June 2004 as a not –for profit organization. It has its head office in Madina in Accra, an office for Northern Ghana and Burkina Faso located at Bolgatanga in the Upper East region and three research offices located in Navrongo, Garu and Berekusu.

We strive to make the 60% of Africans who live below the poverty line the center of trade and development policy. We work to advance the human rights of the poor especially women and seek to influence policy in favour of women's equality and contribute to broader social and economic well-being in West Africa.

GrassRootsAfrica accomplishes this mission, in partnership with others, through research, capacity building, and advocacy on issues affecting marginalised and vulnerable communities with special focus on women's economic, health, and social status.

With poverty reduction and the strengthening of the political, economic and social rights of the poor and the marginalised among our highest priorities, the foundation works with partner organizations around the world to enhance knowledge, and improve policies and programs that:

  • Increase women’s control over reproductive and productive resources
  • Improve women’s income-earning opportunities and capabilities
  • Improve the access of the poor especially women to basic services and the necessities of life such as health, education, water, sanitation and food.
  • Support Knowledge sharing across professions and communities that enhance the integrity of  individuals and households
  • Emphasize equitable national and international trade rules and pro-poor national development options.
  • Encourage Citizen-Government engagement that promote rights and improve good governance.

We have a special focus on women because the majority of women in Africa are doubly oppressed: first as poor people and secondly as women. They are also at the center of the care economy and literally carry the community on their backs. There cannot be any meaningful development in Africa that negates the rights of women.

GrassRootsAfrica works with partner organizations around the world to enhance knowledge, policies and programs to increase women's control over productive assets;
